| What is the da Vinci Robotic System ?
Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) allows me to perform many kinds of major surgery with a variety of benefits for my patient:
less trauma and pain
minimal scarring
faster recovery and shorter hospital stays
protection of the functions (continence and sexual functions)
Surgeries are performed through small incisions, which replace the large incisions needed for conventional open surgeries. With MIS, the goal is to accomplish internal repair while leaving the body surface as natural as it was prior to surgery.
Although the general term "robotic surgery" is often used to refer to the technology, this term can give the impression that the the da Vinci robot is performing the surgery. In contrast, it cannot-in any manner-run on its own. This is due to the fact it was not designed as an autonomous system and lacks any substantive decision making software, instead it relies on an experienced surgeon operator for all input, direction, and decision making.
The da Vinci System consists of four interactive robotic arms on a robot tower which are controlled from the surgeon's console (Figure-1a, -1b). The three working arms accept a wide variety of modified surgical instruments that can perform all the needed manipulations to perform surgery (Figure-2a nad -2b).

A dedicated arm holds and also controls a stereoscopic laparoscopic camera that produces a three dimensional high-definition view of the operative field (Figure-2a). While viewing through this advanced laparoscope, the surgeon can control all the working and visual robotic arms from the console. At the da Vinci console, your surgeon operates while seated comfortably, viewing a highly magnified 3D image of the body’s interior. To operate, the surgeon uses master controls that work like forceps. The da Vinci System scales, filters and translates the surgeon's hand movements into more precise micro-movements of the instruments, which operate through small incisions in the body (Figure 3a, -3b, -3c, -3d).

This component provides true three dimention images of the operative field. Operative images are enhanced, refined and optimized using image synchronizers, high intensity illuminators and camera control units during the course of the robotic surgery (Figure-4a, -4b, -4c and -4d). By dramatically enhancing visualization, precision, control and dexterity, the da Vinci System overcomes the limitations of traditional laparoscopic technology, helping physicians to perform complex surgery in a manner never before experienced. Clinically superior results
The da Vinci robotic surgery system often provides superior clinical results when compared to non-robotic traditional and scope assisted procedures and open surgery. This is because the da Vinci system allows the surgeon a full three dimensional high resolution view of what is being operated on. The da Vinci view screen console is equipped to provide the surgeon revolutionary three dimensional multi-level magnification spectrum. Furthermore, the da Vinci system’s sensitive electronics and one centimeter diameter surgical arms allow the surgeon to make highly precise movements inside of the incision. The da Vinci System’s tiny wristed instruments have an even greater range of motion than the human hand. da Vinci seamlessly filters any tremors from your surgeon’s hands and scales his or her motions, translating them into more precise movements of the instrument tips.
This means that the malignant tissue can be removed with an efficiency and ease unheard of prior to the era of robotic surgery and the protection of functional structures can be achieved with experienced hands during the procedure. This greater precision equates to a reduced likelihood of relapse due to missed cancerous tissue. The precision of the da Vinci system also allows for the surgeon to largely avoid damaging healthy tissue or structures, which improves clinical results, reduces scar tissue build up, and contributes to an overall shorter recovery period.
Reduced risk of complications
Surgery is always an inherent risky medical procedure. However, for the treatment of cancer, surgical options can be the most effective choice in eradicating the malignant tumors without the painful side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
Among the most serious risks associated with surgical treatments is the possibility of infection at the incision side. Such infections are often the primary causes of serious complications. da Vinci Robotic system greatly mitigates that risk of infection in a number of ways:
The size of incision(s) made is significantly smaller with robotic surgery than with the traditional open procedure. Such a relatively large incision subjects the patient to a number of operative and post-operative infectious agents. That is to say that not only is the open incision site susceptible to any infectious agents during the procedure, but also the closed but unhealed wound left from the incision may be at risk of contracting harmful infections. The da Vinci robotic surgical system, however, utilizes a much less invasive technique which requires four to five incisions smaller than two inches each. And the whole surgical procedure abdominal wall is not open, the robotic surgery is performed with totally closing system. Therefore, infection risk during the surgical procedure is impossible.
The bleeding is statistical significantly reduced with daVinci Robotic Surgery during and after the procedures when compared the open surgery. Because, under 3D and high definition magnified vision, the small vessels can easily be identified and secured using robotic arms. In my experience with daVinci Robotic surgery, the mean blood loss is under 100 ml and blood transfusion rate is %0.
Penile erectile dysfunction and incontinence rates are highly reduced after daVinci Robotic Suergery in experienced surgeons hands. The huge advantages for protection of sexual and continence function is discucced in the section of “daVinci Robotic System in Prostate Cancer”
Quicker recovery period
When your physician determines surgery is your best treatment option and refers you to an very experienced oncological and reconstructive surgeon, you can rest assured that Prof. Dr. Tibet Erdogru. Prof. Dr. Tibet Erdogru, having experience with about 1000 laparoscopic and daVinci Robotic surgeries in Urology, and the da Vinci Robotic system offer you the best chance of a full and expedient recovery.
da Vinci’s robotic surgical technology optimizes your chances of experiencing a quicker recovery time opposed to traditional surgical prostatectomy. The smaller incisions required to maneuver the operating arms heal much faster, require less sutures and are less vulnerable to tearing or infection. The highly precise movements of the robotic arms allow for cleaner removals of malignant tissue. Such precision also produces a more targeted approach which reduces damage to healthy tissue during the operation. The design of the robotic operating arms allow for the entire procedure to be conducted without having to leverage operating tools against the walls of the incision. All of these advantages translate to a speedier and less worrisome recovery period.
Minimized scaring and better cosmesis
The sheer size of the incision needed to perform a traditional prostatectomy produces significant scaring of the patient’s lower abdomen. " da Vinci robotic prostatectomy “procedure allows for incisions which can heal with little to no visible scaring.
